Luke 1:50-53 Thoughts on Mary's song - Day 321

Good afternoon friends,

I want to take a moment and remind us that worship is not confined to 10 o'clock on Sunday morning.  We are to prepare all week long for our time together on Sundays.  Reading the Word and prayer are two of the external means of sanctification according to WCF Chapter 13.  How did the Spirit prepare Mary to sing such a song?  Daily study of the OT where there were other inspired songs.

I am struck by the use of songs in response to what God has done or promises to do throughout the Bible.  The psalms are all songs.  Hannah's prayer when  Samuel was given to the Lord is similar to Mary's song. Moses' song after Egyptians drown in the Red Sea.  

These are all inspired songs. So I wonder why it is that we want to come up with new songs not based on these inspired ones.

His mercy is for those who fear him.  Therefore, there is no mercy for those who do not fear him.  The only rational thing to do is to fear him.   Fear is to be in awe of, to revere.  God as he has revealed himself in scripture  is awe inspiring.  Over and over, we read "there is none like you".  When people say they believe in "God", it is usually a god of their own making.  If the "God" you believe in is not awe inspiring, someone to be reverenced, then you do not believe in the God of the Bible.

He scatters the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.  Could be the people who are proud in the thoughts of their hearts.  Or when he scatters the proud it in the thoughts of their hearts.  Either way, the proud are scattered.   Strong's dictionary - with an overweening estimate of one's means or merits, despising others or even treating them with contempt, haughty.  James tells us that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.  The only rational thing to do is be humble.

He has brought down the mighty from their thrones.  I look around and see many mighty still seated on their thrones.  They don't have to be kings or other royalty.  Politicians of all flavors style themselves as "powerful" in what ever sphere in which they operate.    Look at Pilate claiming power over Jesus.  Not saying that all politicians should be removed.  We just need to remember that their authority is derived from God.

Good morning fellow members of the household of God, After writing the devotional, I am thinking about the Passover as a household event.  In ancient Israel, the physical household of man was covered by the blood of the lamb.  Now, it is the spiritual household of God that is covered by the blood of the Lamb. Blessings, Jeff The account of the greatest celebration of Passover since time of Solomon (v 26).   Observations: One of the things that made this one great is participation of some of the tribes from the northern kingdom.  Israel was a united kingdom and Solomon and now toward the end of the northern kingdom, there is at least a semblance of being united. Revelation 22:3-5 Final and eternal restoration - Day 365
