Good afternoon everyone,
I want to mention that we are nearing the 3/4 point in the reading plan. October 1 is the 9 month point. So hang in there and finish strong.
Blessings
Jeff
So how serious is the sin of idolatry when committed by God's chosen people? Can't get much more graphic than this portion of the chapter. All goes back to second commandment. Then there is the thread of this commandment that shows up in various places to emphasize the prohibition.
This makes me think of Romans 7:7-8 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead.
In Israel's case, Sin seized an opportunity through the commandment You shall not make for yourselves idols to produce all kinds of idolatry in them.
Paul tells us that the purpose of the law is to convict people of spiritual deadness. Paul was saved when the Holy Spirit used the law to do its work in him. The law cannot justify or sanctify anyone.
Apart from regeneration, all people everywhere are idolaters and condemned temporally and eternally.
The church is the witness to the world that God has not abandoned people to idolatry. In Christ each believer is set free from idolatry. Thanks be to God.
