Psalm 112:1 - Thoughts on greatly delighting - Day 169

Hello again my friends,

Listened to an Al Mohler commentary this morning.  Quoted a Harvard professor who likened lies to cockroaches.  You just can't get rid of them completely.  Dr. Mohler went on to say that as people of the truth, meditating on God's truth so that we are saturated with it helps us to keep lies out of our minds.  This reading is from yesterday, but that commentary was very appropriate.

What is blessedness?  Fearing the Lord and greatly delighting in his commandments..  The material blessings follow.  The narrow gate is fearing the Lord and delighting in his commandments.  The pasture beyond is where the good things described here are found.  Attempting to get the wealth and riches without going through this gate is futile.   

Has light dawned in the darkness for you?  This is the sign that you are truly upright, gracious, merciful and righteous.  The proof that you fear the Lord and greatly delight in his commandments.

What does fearing the Lord and greatly delighting in his commandments mean?

Some thoughts.  First, it seems that fear requires knowledge.  In God's case, all the heathen nations had no knowledge of Israel's God.  Remember Pharaoh and "Who is the Lord?"  Since they were ignorant of the history of God's ways revealed to Moses, most of them did not fear the Lord.  But when the saw how he saved His people, fear consumed them (Rahab describing people of Jericho).  

Second, delighting in commandments takes us back to Psalm 1.  It is not just having pleasant thoughts about the law but takes action (meditating and obeying).  And here it is not just delighting but greatly delighting.

Malachi 2:10-12 Here we go again!! Day 363

Good afternoon friends, As we draw to the end of the Old Testament, we see that Judah has rebuilt the temple and the walls of Jerusalem, but they are following in the footsteps of faithless fathers and not in the footsteps of Abraham and ultimately God.  The exile was a low point, but now a new low is about to happen.  The prophetic voice has once again become warning and not encouraging. Faithful reading and preaching of the word is all that keeps us from losing our way.  May we be faithful in our generation. 2 Chronicles 33:7-9 Thoughts on Davidic covenant - Day 362

Good morning faithful readers, The finish line is in sight!!!  One of the themes of scripture is that God is a covenant keeping God.  There are many between God and man. Adam, Noah, David are examples.  Covenants are more than promises.  They are made between a superior and inferior with conditions for each side and blessing and penalties based on keeping the conditions.  These are covenants of works which fallen man was unable to keep.  Thanks be to God that the Father made a covenant of grace with Christ, the second Adam, which he fully kept.
