Deuteronomy 28:20 - Blessings and cursing - Day 174

First 14 verses of this chapter are the blessings for obedience after entering the Promised Land.  The next 54 verses are the curses for disobedience.  Seems that "the stick" is more of a motivator than "the carrot"

God clearly threatens his people who know His laws, statues, commandments and rules with dreadful results if they disobey.  

How are we to understand God's blessing and cursing in light of this chapter?

God has a high standard for His people.  In the OT, this was Israel and Judah.  In the NT, this is the Church.  But this doesn't mean that perfect perpetual obedience was or is possible.  When I look at Israel, I can be dismayed that they fell away so quickly, but not that they fell away.  As Paul explains in Romans, the law exposes our sinfulness and drives us to the Savior.  It does not and cannot save us.

Common grace is the only explanation for delay in judgment.  But common grace is not saving grace.

The gospel is the only hope for deliverance.  Form of government cannot save us.  Gospel warns of impending disaster and is a road map to blessing in Christ.

Good morning fellow members of the household of God, After writing the devotional, I am thinking about the Passover as a household event.  In ancient Israel, the physical household of man was covered by the blood of the lamb.  Now, it is the spiritual household of God that is covered by the blood of the Lamb. Blessings, Jeff The account of the greatest celebration of Passover since time of Solomon (v 26).   Observations: One of the things that made this one great is participation of some of the tribes from the northern kingdom.  Israel was a united kingdom and Solomon and now toward the end of the northern kingdom, there is at least a semblance of being united. Revelation 22:3-5 Final and eternal restoration - Day 365
