Exodus 40:34 The glory of the Lord Day 88

Good morning fellow travelers,

Congratulations!!! You have reached the end of Exodus.  We have been through ups and downs in a relative short period of time with the children of Israel.  Our brother Moses has been up and down the mountain several times.

Want to point out the benefit of electronic versions such as Olive Tree.  A Bible with Strong's numbers allows you to look at the Hebrew or Greek word and definitions.  If you have a Bible with Strong's numbers and Strong's Dictionary, you can do the same thing but it takes a while.  I have inserted some of the definitions of interest in today's passage.

The Glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 

kāḇōḏ: A masculine singular noun meaning honor, glory, majesty, wealth. This term is commonly used of God (Ex. 33:18; Ps. 72:19; Isa. 3:8; Ezek. 1:28); humans (Gen. 45:13; Job 19:9; Ps. 8:5[6]; 21:5[6]); and objects (1 Sam. 2:8; Esth. 1:4; Isa. 10:18), particularly of the ark of the covenant (1 Sam. 4:21, 22).

kabed; a primitive root; to be heavy, i.e. in a bad sense (burdensome, severe, dull) or in a good sense (numerous, rich, honorable; causatively, to make weighty (in the same two senses)

How to describe the indescribable. Hyperbole and idiom in English. But Moses seems to be stuck with weightiness or heaviness.  Something like the value of gold is determined by its weight, so to say God is heavy beyond measure means He is valuable beyond measure.  The same word can be used and its meaning depends on context.  Kabod when speaking about a person is not the same kabod of God. 

Neither the cloud or the glory were actually God. They are the physical manifestation of His invisible nature. In Hebrews 1, Jesus is the radiance of God's glory.  

Instruction - second commandment. No image or likeness of anything in creation can be substituted for God. Even the manifestation in cloud and pillar of fire can only be in words. 

Thanksgiving - the unchangeable God. Perfect in all Your ways. Changes in the way You chose to manifest Yourself do not mean that You changed. Because we no longer see a pillar of cloud and fire does not mean You are no longer glorious and worthy of all praise and thanks. 

Confession - not being moved by Your majesty so that I remain shackled by earthly cares and affections.  The source of prayerlessness.  The indwelling Holy Spirit is some how ignored. 

Petition - I would be as much aware of Your presence in me and the gathered church  as ancient Israel seeing the cloud and fire.

Good morning fellow members of the household of God, After writing the devotional, I am thinking about the Passover as a household event.  In ancient Israel, the physical household of man was covered by the blood of the lamb.  Now, it is the spiritual household of God that is covered by the blood of the Lamb. Blessings, Jeff The account of the greatest celebration of Passover since time of Solomon (v 26).   Observations: One of the things that made this one great is participation of some of the tribes from the northern kingdom.  Israel was a united kingdom and Solomon and now toward the end of the northern kingdom, there is at least a semblance of being united. 2 Chronicles 35:23-26 Lament for the last good king - Day 364

Good morning fellow exiles and pilgrims, One more day of devotions.  We are indeed exiles and pilgrims in this world as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.  The 20th anniversary of 9/11 attacks can serve as a reminder that this world is not our home. Blessings, Jeff The lamentations for Josiah written by Jeremiah.  However, the book of Lamentations does not include any reference to Josiah as they are focused on the fall of Jerusalem.  While these lost lamentations were "made the rule" there are only 4 more kings and none of them were good like Josiah and none died in Jerusalem.  The phrase "to this day" generally refers to the time of the author (post exile).  Taken together, it may be that these laments were for the last good king and during the exile the people were longing for the next good king.
