Good evening friends,

It has often been said that God has a sense of humor.  Manna means what is it.  So they went out to collect "what is it" Kind of like "who's on first?"

Provision of manna (physical bread of heaven) makes me wonder about Jesus (spiritual bread of heave).  It also makes me wonder about "our daily bread".

Let us think of how they are alike.

Both are gifts.  Israelites did nothing to produce or earn the manna. Likewise, we can do nothing to merit Christ.

There are restrictions on receiving. Israelites had to gather manna early in the morning and were supposed to be obedient in amount gathered (a certain amount for each person).  Jesus must be accepted in this life and Today is the day of salvation.  No one should delay.  There was a time when it is too late.to gather manna and there will be a time when it is too late to accept Christ.

Both are Sufficient - God provides more than enough manna to meet the need (what isn't gathered melts when the sun gets hot, even though some people gather more than they need, every one can get enough).  Jesus is sufficient to completely save each and every person who believes.  Nothing can be added to manna or Jesus.

These are just a few ways that the physical sign points to a spiritual reality.  I encourage you to meditate on other similarities.

As far as "daily bread", the manna was only supplied for 40 years.  But that was a lot of manna.  Dependence is the lesson.  After Israel finally entered the Promised Land, they were still dependent on God.  Jesus was driving the same  point home to his disciples.

Malachi 2:10-12 Here we go again!! Day 363

Good afternoon friends, As we draw to the end of the Old Testament, we see that Judah has rebuilt the temple and the walls of Jerusalem, but they are following in the footsteps of faithless fathers and not in the footsteps of Abraham and ultimately God.  The exile was a low point, but now a new low is about to happen.  The prophetic voice has once again become warning and not encouraging. Faithful reading and preaching of the word is all that keeps us from losing our way.  May we be faithful in our generation. 2 Chronicles 33:7-9 Thoughts on Davidic covenant - Day 362

Good morning faithful readers, The finish line is in sight!!!  One of the themes of scripture is that God is a covenant keeping God.  There are many between God and man. Adam, Noah, David are examples.  Covenants are more than promises.  They are made between a superior and inferior with conditions for each side and blessing and penalties based on keeping the conditions.  These are covenants of works which fallen man was unable to keep.  Thanks be to God that the Father made a covenant of grace with Christ, the second Adam, which he fully kept.
