Ezekiel 38:17-19 Our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe - Day 278

Friends,

A catch up devotion for the day.  As we have mentioned before, prophetic can drift between specific and symbolic.  And it is hard to really know when it has happened.  I hope these thoughts are encouraging

Chapters 38 & 39 are prophecies against Gog.

From Reformation Study Bible notes:

Rather than add to speculation about future history, modern readers should understand that Ezekiel himself uses these nations as symbolic references to all powers arrayed against God’s people. Ezekiel contains many oracles against foreign nations (Eze 29), but there is none specifically against Babylon, where he and the exiles were held in captivity. Some have suggested that Magog, Meshech, and Tubal are veiled references to Babylon, the immediate enemy. Gog and Magog recur in John’s apocalyptic description of future conflict between good and evil (Rev 20:8). Ezekiel 38:2

I thought v17 to 19 were interesting for a couple of reasons.

1. my wrath will be roused in my anger. For in my jealousy and in my blazing wrath...   OK, I get it already God is very angry with Gog.  

2. Are you he of whom I spoke in former days by my servants the prophets of Israel, who in those days prophesied for years that I would bring you against them?  Why is God asking a question that He obviously knows the answer to.  God knows that previous prophets spoke about an unnamed nation from the north.  God knows that this previously unnamed nation would invade Israel

3.  Gog, Magog and the great earthquake reappear in Revelation.

So if I accept the symbolic reference to all powers arrayed against God's people, how should I think about this?  As I prepare for sermon on "lead us not into temptation..", I can't help but think of the world, the flesh and the devil as the powers arrayed against individual believers and the Church.  God knows about them, He has told us that they will seem invincible to us but that He will utterly defeat them.  The rule and reign and dominion of sin has been broken.  As I seek to "let not sin reign in your mortal body" I am fighting a defeated enemy who can mount serious counter attack.  But ultimate victory is assured

Dear Friends, Some times we forget that Moses wrote Genesis.  Obviously, he did not have first hand knowledge of the events of creation.  But God did and revealed them to Moses.  The "story arc" is clear to Moses despite the millenia of history between Genesis and Leviticus.  The plan for ultimate restoration is hazy, but God is at work repairing some of the damage. 1 Chronicles 24:1-6 How about those Levites! Day 332

Good morning friends, Good foundations are important.  Our author turns to the religious life of the returning exiles. Blessings, Jeff We have seen the emphasis on the Davidic line in the  political life of Israel.  The other area of emphasis is the Aaronic priesthood and Levitical workers. In this passage we have a quick review of the somewhat sanitized picture of the start of Aaron's line.  The returning exiles would have known that Nadab and Abihu did not just "die before their father without children".  They rebelled against God by offering unauthorized fire and were themselves consumed by fire from the Lord. Leviticus 10.  The case of Abiathar  son of Ahitub son of Ahimelech, who was faithful to David, but later rebelled with Adonijah is also not mentioned. But the passage points to the importance of the Aaronic line to the rebuilding of the temple by the exiles.  The history of the northern kingdom which was without the Levites from the beginning could not be repeat

Revelation 22:3-5 Final and eternal restoration - Day 365

Dear saints in the Lord, Congratulations!  You made it.  We have been through much turmoil in the last year ('20-'21).  But God is faithful to His promises.  I trust that you have been blessed in your reading and have drawn closer to God.   Since we didn't get the blog up and running at the beginning of the challenge, I am going to go back and post entries to cover that first month or so.   Blessings, Jeff Nothing accursed in the city of God, the new Jerusalem.  The presence of sin will be gone.  I am working on memorizing Westminster Shorter Catechism and currently on question 82.  Is any man able perfectly to keep the commandments of God? No mere man since the fall is able in this life perfectly to keep the commandments of God but does daily break them in thought, word and deed.
