Ezekiel 35:10-11 - Esau have I hated comes to fruition - Day 275

Another history matters devotion.  Trying to catch up from last weekend. 

Mount Seir is representative of Edom which is Esau, Jacob's brother.  When Jacob came back to Canaan after the 20 years spent with Laban, Jacob was afraid of what Esau might do to him.  But eventually, 

Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, his livestock, all his beasts, and all his property that he had acquired in the land of Canaan. He went into a land away from his brother Jacob. For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together. The land of their sojournings could not support them because of their livestock.  So Esau settled in the hill country of Seir. (Esau is Edom.) Genesis 36:6-8

It would seem that after all the years that Esau and his descendants lived outside of Canaan that they would not really be interested in taking Israel and Judah's place when they are sent dispersed or sent into exile.  Yet that is exactly why God will judge them.  After all, Israel was in Egypt for 400 years, then period of the Judges and Kings.

To me, this just points out the exclusivity of God's choice.  The seed promised in Genesis 3:15 is singular.  A single son is the chosen line.  Not all the physical off spring of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, David, etc  were children of faith. Here Edom is freely choosing to take advantage of Israel and Judah's judgment to show their hatred for God's choice of Jacob instead of Esau.

Malachi 2:10-12 Here we go again!! Day 363

Good afternoon friends, As we draw to the end of the Old Testament, we see that Judah has rebuilt the temple and the walls of Jerusalem, but they are following in the footsteps of faithless fathers and not in the footsteps of Abraham and ultimately God.  The exile was a low point, but now a new low is about to happen.  The prophetic voice has once again become warning and not encouraging. Faithful reading and preaching of the word is all that keeps us from losing our way.  May we be faithful in our generation. 2 Chronicles 33:7-9 Thoughts on Davidic covenant - Day 362

Good morning faithful readers, The finish line is in sight!!!  One of the themes of scripture is that God is a covenant keeping God.  There are many between God and man. Adam, Noah, David are examples.  Covenants are more than promises.  They are made between a superior and inferior with conditions for each side and blessing and penalties based on keeping the conditions.  These are covenants of works which fallen man was unable to keep.  Thanks be to God that the Father made a covenant of grace with Christ, the second Adam, which he fully kept.
