1 Samuel 23:15 - Parting of David and Jonathan - Day 242

Good morning brothers and sisters,

A few thoughts on the final meeting of these two men.  Do you remember the last time you saw a close friend before their passing especially if it was unexpected.  I was in a men's  Bible study with a guy who lived in Salem.  Everybody else was from the Groton area and we made jokes about having to pack a lunch for the trip to Salem.  Anyway, we met at his house on a Wednesday evening on the topic of eternal security.  On Saturday afternoon, he died of a heart attack.  Now we drive by the road to his house every week on our way to church.  And I think of him.

The penny has dropped at least for Saul.  He knows that David will be king after him, so the one person who had brought him relief from the harmful spirit from the Lord is not banished.  Another step down the slope.  

But Jonathan still thinks that although he is Saul's heir, he will survive and be second to David.  Unfortunately, the king's son either becomes king or is killed along with the king.  That is the way royalty works.  I always think of the end of the Romanov dynasty in Russia.  The Bolsheviks killed Tsar Nicholas and his son.  Certainly David would have been content with Jonathan as second, but the division of Israel and Judah over the rightful king would have been a mess.

This is last recorded meeting between David and Jonathan.  As the survivor, David undoubtedly remembered this day for the rest of his life.  How good it is to part with people on good terms.  We never know if it will be the last time.  God in His wisdom does not let us know such things, but gives us examples of Ephesians 4:26 don't let the sun go down on your anger.

Malachi 2:10-12 Here we go again!! Day 363

Good afternoon friends, As we draw to the end of the Old Testament, we see that Judah has rebuilt the temple and the walls of Jerusalem, but they are following in the footsteps of faithless fathers and not in the footsteps of Abraham and ultimately God.  The exile was a low point, but now a new low is about to happen.  The prophetic voice has once again become warning and not encouraging. Faithful reading and preaching of the word is all that keeps us from losing our way.  May we be faithful in our generation. 2 Chronicles 33:7-9 Thoughts on Davidic covenant - Day 362

Good morning faithful readers, The finish line is in sight!!!  One of the themes of scripture is that God is a covenant keeping God.  There are many between God and man. Adam, Noah, David are examples.  Covenants are more than promises.  They are made between a superior and inferior with conditions for each side and blessing and penalties based on keeping the conditions.  These are covenants of works which fallen man was unable to keep.  Thanks be to God that the Father made a covenant of grace with Christ, the second Adam, which he fully kept.
